Cordillera Real Expedition

Tour Overview

Our Cordillera Real Expedition program led by bolivian mountain guides is aimed at aspirant mountaineers with little or no previous mountaineering experience who are looking to expand their skills and experience in an incredible High Altitude setting. The ease of access and the almost non-existent approaches in the Cordillera Real make it possible to climb several peaks in a short stay. We will spend 14 days visiting the highest Capital City in the World, the craddle of the Inca empire, the world's highest developed Sxy area, Tiwanaku Bolivia's most important archeological site, and climbing three beautiful and accesible Bolivian Mountains. We will stand over 6,400 m (21,000 ft) summit, staring at the vast expanse of peaks stretching north and south.

    Land costs include:

  • Transportation. Bolivian Journeys has a private driver to provide in country transport, thus ensuring our safety and facilitating an independent schedule that does not depend on public transportation.
  • Guided Tours to: Tiwanaku and Chacaltaya.
  • Food. We eat high quality meals using fresh local ingredients.
  • All group climbing gear.
  • Mountaineering tents (Mountain Hardware, North Face, MSR).
  • Mules and porters.
  • Professional mountain guide.
  • Land costs do not include:

  • International round-trip airfare,
  • Hotel while in La Paz.
  • Meals except while climbing.
  • Entrance fee to: Chacaltaya, Tiwanaku, Pequeño Alpamayo, Huayna Potosi and Illimani.

  • Gratuities to guides and staff.
  • Insurance.
  • Rescue or medical expenses that may occur during the trip.
  • Day 1

    ARRIVE TO LA PAZ: Group meets in La Paz the world's highest capital over 12,000 ft in elevation, where you begin the process of acclimatizing as soon as you step off the plane.
  • Day 2

    TIWANAKU: Bolivia's most important archaeological site. We will spend the day wandering through the monumental stone figures, courtyards and the impressive Gate of the Sun. On the way back to La Paz we'll have an incredible view over the whole Cordillera Real de los Andes.
  • Day 3

    CHACALTAYA: Today we go to the world's highest developed ski area 5,290 m (17,351 feet). A short hike up will take us to the summit, our reward is a spectacular view of the entire Cordillera Real mountain range, Lake Titikaka, the City of La Paz and sometimes even the Amazon Basin.
  • Day 4

    LA PAZ - CHIARKHOTA: We leave our hotel in La Paz and travel to Tuni with the animals carrying the bulk of our gear, we make an easy-paced ascent to our base camp at 4,650 m (15,252 ft). The trek takes us through some beautiful valley landscapes, and our camp provides excellent views of the many surrounding mountains and puts us in position to make a series of single-day ascents.
  • Day 5

    PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO 5,370 m (17,614 ft): Our primary goal in this group are Tarija and Pequeño Alpamayo, a hidden peak with a very impressive pyramidal summit. climb a broad glacier to a col, traverse along a ridge to the base of the summit pyramid, and then ascend directly to the top. The entire route is photogenic and offers excellent climbing.
  • Day 6

    Transfer to Huayna Potosi's BC.
  • Day 7

    HUAYNA POTOSI - HIGH CAMP: Assisted by porters, we move to high camp at 5,300 m (17,384 ft). The hike up takes about 3 hours.
  • Day 8

    HUAYNA POTOSI - SUMMIT . 6,088 m (19,968 ft): We rise early for our summit attempt. We begin our climb on a steep hard snow of 50 degrees and then traverse to easier snow slopes where we cross a few slopes and crevasses. We will climb directly to the summit via the face 40 degrees. Return all the way back down to base camp and to our waiting vehicles that return us to our hotel in La Paz.
  • Day 9

    REST DAY: Rest day in La Paz, free day to shop and sightsee.
  • Day 10

    ILLIMANI - BASE CAMP: Today we depart for our final objective, 21,193 foot Nevado Illimani. A scenic drive through the countryside of Bolivia ends at the small village of Hacienda Una. Here we load our burros for the trek to basecamp. The four-hour walk to basecamp leads through small farming villages and alpine meadows.
  • Day 11

    ILLIMANI - HIGH CAMP: Move up to Illimani high camp at Nido de Condores ("Condor's Nest") at 17,880 ft., about 4-6 hours of hiking. Porters will assist us in carrying our loads to high camp. Camping from which we have a beautiful view of sunset over the altiplano.
  • Day 12

    ILLIMANI - SUMMIT. 6,439 m (21,120 ft): After threading our way through a series of crevassed areas we reach moderately steep slopes (30-40 degrees) for several hours before reaching the scenic summit ridge. The view from the summit of one of South America's finest peaks is outstanding. A great reward to a strenuous and fantastic day of climbing.
  • Day 13

    ILLIMANI - LA PAZ: Return all the way back down to Unna to our waiting vehicles that return us to our hotel in La Paz. End of our services.
